Words & Phrases

  • I had (real / authentic) soba in Karuizawa at a famous spot.

    • Did you stand in a long line for the soba?

    • The soba came with a walnut dip.

  • There’s a slight slope from the station up to the temple. (‘Slope’ an incline that is not steep)

  • The hotel has spacious rooms with private onsen baths.

    • The hotel has an in-room hot spring.

    • The ceilings are high.

  • The tour I wanted to take was cancelled due to a lack of people.

  • Sometimes there is poor transportation, especially in mountain areas.

  • On the train, in the open seating area, there were no seats together. (‘Open seating area’ is the usual way to describe a section without assigned seats)

  • He needs more experience in politics.
