Words & Phrases

  • Saury (noun) (has similar pronunciation as ‘sorry’) = a slender, silver-coloured fish found in the Pacific, also called Pacific saury

    • Grilled saury is a popular autumn dish in Japan.

    • The fishermen returned with a large catch of saury this morning.

    • She served the saury with grated daikon and soy sauce.

  • An estimated 2 million people in Japan do some form of hula, from exercise to social groups to professionals.

  • They do their hair with wax.

    • They use wax to style their hair.

  • 1 Paris during the 1920s was home to the finest writers and artists of the age. (Here we use ‘the’ with the superlative ‘finest’)

  • In real life (phrase) = in actual, everyday life, as opposed to online, fictional, or imagined situations

    • He seems funny online, but in real life he’s very serious.

    • Meeting her in real life was completely different from chatting on social media.

    • In real life, emergencies require calm thinking, not just planning.

  • The might Amazon River winds its way through the rainforest. (Here we use ‘the’ with a river name)
