Words & Phrases

  • Is there a link between smoking and cataracts.

  • I was watching the Tokyo Waterworks YouTube page. It had live cameras along various rivers.

  • Water was flooding into my yard yesterday. It looked like a waterfall.

    • You took a good video of that flooding.

    • Were some flowers washed away in all that rain.

  • The snack lasted three days, usually I eat snacks quickly.

  • Don’t you put on weight snacking at midnight?

  • I usually wake up once or twice in the middle of the night, I want to be able to sleep through the night.

  • Do you carry any cash?

    • Yes, I always have some cash, but I prefer to use a card or PayPay.

  • Do you have a household accounting book?

    • No, not at all. I’m not good with money.

  • Your Golden Anniversary is coming up in a few years.

  • Tokyo’s new air conditioner campaign has a lot of restrictions.

  • Fluorescent lights are becoming obsolete.

Appropriate Language

  • The phrase “can’t stand” is an informal way to say that you strongly dislike something or someone. It’s stronger than just saying don’t like.

    • I can’t stand the heat in summer.

    • She can’t stand horror movies, they give her nightmares.

    • I can’t stand him when he brags like that.

  • “Can stand” means that something is tolerable, acceptable, or that you are able to endure it, even if you don’t really like it.

    • I can stand the noise for a little while, but not all day.

    • She can stand spicy food, but not too much of it.

    • He said he could stand waiting another hour if necessary.
