Words & Phrases

  • It felt muggy inside, so I turned on the AC to dehumidify. (verb)

    • I turned on the dehumidifier. (noun)

  • In English, meteorologists and news outlets use “Linear precipitation band” or “liner rain-band”

    • Our area might get hit with torrential rain through the early morning.

  • It’s getting dark outside. I think it’s been (spitting / sprinkling) on and off for the past hour.

    • My mood has ups and downs with this kind of weather.

    • My mood goes up and down in this kind of weather.

  • Do you suffer from seasonal affective disorder?

    • It’s hard to keep my spirits high all the time.

    • What do you do when your spirits are low?

  • I think I have a pretty happy-go-lucky attitude. (= meaning carefree, unconcerned about future problems, and naturally cheerful)

    • He’s often upbeat. You can always see him smiling.

  • After finishing cleaning the yard, I had a good sense of accomplishment. It felt great to get it all done.

    • She felt accomplished after doing some of the cleaning.

  • What anime have you watched? (= Japanese / Asian style animation)

    • What cartoons have you watched? (= North American animation)

    • This is similar for “manga” and “comic books
