Topic: City Life & Country Life

We will examine and practise vocabulary related to life in the city and countryside.

Lesson Notes September 8, 2026 (Vocabulary Building)

Words & Phrases

  • The hotel used to be a prison. Each room was converted from several prison cells.

    • Jail; sentence usually short time, people found guilty of minor crimes, often small local facility.

    • Prison; sentence usually long time (including “life”), found guilty of serious crimes, larger facility run by the state.

  • Thailand has amazing street food. There is everything from street cooking to busy markets.

Life in the country

  • The utilities in the country are often worse than in the city. (= gas, electricity, water and sewage, internet etc)

  • Were you connected to city water or did you have a well?

  • One disadvantage is that local shops often closed or go bankrupt.

  • It was about a 30 minute walk to the station from my house.
