Lesson Notes September 5, 2025 (FRIDAY ZOOM)

Words & Phrases

  • Thanks for letting me know about that restaurant.

    • I went there for lunch. (When we use words such as ‘here’ and ‘there’ we do not use a preposition, NOT “I went to there for lunch)

  • The restaurant has a comfortable outdoor covered (terrace / patio).

    • There is a cafe area, a bar area, a dining area and a terrace area.

  • Alumni who graduated in the same year get together every so often.

  • It was raining rather hard earlier today. It’s still raining, but not so badly.

  • Be careful of lightning, hail, and sudden heavy rain and changes in wind.

  • Many families consider their pets part of the family, so losing them is hard.

    • Pets are like family, and their loss can be deeply felt.

  • Feed (noun) = food given to farm animals or livestock

    • The farmer bought feed for the chickens and pigs.

    • Cattle need high-quality feed to stay healthy and produce milk.

  • Cats and dogs have a natural instinct to seek solitude when they’re very sick or close to dying.

Appropriate Language

  • Gust of wind (noun) = a sudden, strong burst of wind

    • A gust of wind blew her hat off as she walked down the street.

    • The gusts of wind made it difficult to keep the umbrella steady.

    • A sudden gust of wind knocked over the chairs on the patio.

  • My sister's dog (died / passed away) the other day.

    • Use pass away in polite conversation or when you want to sound gentle.

    • Use die in neutral, or slightly formal situations
