Words & Phrases

  • The word “the flu” is used loosely to mean “influenza”, as well as other viral illnesses like common colds or stomach viruses.

    • It wasn't just a cold—I had the flu and was stuck in bed for a week.

    • I’ve got the stomach flu, I might have eaten something bad the other day.

  • Have you ever been to South Korea?

    • I’ve never been, but I really would like to visit sometime.

    • Yeah, I go from time to time. I really love the food.

  • These days more and more young adults are getting braces to fix their teeth.

  • Recently, we’ve had 29 days of rain. Has anything happened in your neighbourhood?

    • The bank on the local river collapsed during the typhoon.

  • My colleague got pulled over and charged for drinking and driving.

  • I travelled around western Japan for a few days, and I really enjoyed visiting Himeji.

    • China and Korea are west of Japan.

Pronunciation

  • Colleague (noun) ˈkɑːliːɡ / KOL-eeg

Appropriate Language

  • Use "bank" when describing normal scenery ("sitting on the river bank"), and "levee" when discussing civil engineering, storm defence, or flood prevention ("the levees held during the heavy rain").
