Words & Phrases

• Do you dye your hair? (= self-applied)

  • Do you get your hair dyed? (= professional, causative)

• I have to go to my in-laws’ (family) grave after Silver Week.

• I visited Osaka (this past / last) June. (= June 2026)

  • I bought a new car in June of last year. (= June 2025)

  • I bought a new car in the June before last. (= June 2025)

• I volunteered to help organize our next reunion.

  • I have never been an organizer for our reunions before.

Grammar

• "Get [something] [past participle]" is a passive causative structure. It means you arrange for someone else to perform a service on your body, belongings, or property.

  • I got my hair cut. (= a stylist cut it)

  • I got my nails done. (= a manicurist did it)

  • I got my car fixed. (= a mechanic fixed it)

Appropriate Language

• When describing adults—especially adult friends or former classmates—English uses specific terms based on age and context.

  • Use “guys” for everyday informal conversations, and use “men” for formal situations. Only use “boys” when talking about children

    • Some of the guys at the reunion looked much older! (NOT boys)

  • Use “ladies” for everyday friends or polite situations, “women” is a neutral description. Only use “girls” when talking about children.

    • I went out for dinner with the ladies from work. (NOT girls)
