Topic: Dates and Numbers

Lesson Notes September 2, 2025 (Elementary)

Words & Phrases

  • I watched an interview with doctors who talked about liver health. (Noun form; “an interview with someone)

    • The program interviewed doctors about live health. (Verb form; interview + object)

  • The hospital was crowded but she had an appointment at 10am. (We use ‘appointment’ for scheduled meetings for doctors, dentists, lawyers, teachers, hairdressers etc)

    • We use reservation when you want to secure a space at a restaurant, hotel, train, plane, or event.

  • I went for my three-month eye exam.

    • I went for an eye exam, I have to go every three-months.

    • I need to make a reservation for the doctor to examine the back of my eye.

  • At the event, we could light a votive candle inside a paper lantern for people who had died. (‘Votive candle’ is a small candle lit as an offering or prayer)

    • Is the cemetery (close to / near) your house?

Everyday Numbers

  • There are 24 hours in a day.

    • There are 7 days in a week.

  • The English alphabet has 26 letters.

  • Apartment numbers, hotel room numbers, or floor numbers are often read digit by digit, not as a whole number. (Note: Oh is commonly used for 0 in numbers)

    • Room 201 → two oh one

    • Apartment 305 → three oh five

    • Room 1104 → one one oh four

  • In Japanese addresses, numbers are usually read as whole numbers, not digit by digit. ’16-10-1’ becomes ‘sixteen ten one’

  • ‘Flat’ is the British word for ‘apartment’

  • On and off (phrase); not continuously, sometimes happening sometimes not

    • I’ve been studying English on and off for 52 years.
