Words & Phrases

  • During the summer months, I do not want to go outside.

    • In the winter months, I walk more than 10k steps a day.

  • The chairman for Suntory is suspected of obtaining a product containing cannabis from overseas.

  • I once tried crackers made from sardines. They smelled and tasted like them.

  • ‘Pain relief patches’ are used for muscle aches, and we can casually call them ‘muscle patch’

    • Other type of patches include ‘nicotine patches’ (for helping people quit smoking), ‘cooling / warming patches’, ‘motion sickness patches’ etc

  • OTC (over-the-counter), which means medicines you can buy without a prescription

    • I bought some OTC painkillers for my headache.

    • The pharmacy sells both prescription drugs and OTC products.

    • You don’t need a doctor’s note to get OTC allergy medication.

  • The husband uses Apple’s AI to (remove / erase) his wife’s cat from photos, and she is not happy.

    • With Apple Intelligence, you can now remove distracting objects from your photos with the Clean Up tool.

Appropriate Language

  • Advertisement = a general word for any message that tries to sell a product, service, or idea. Can be in print, online, on TV, radio, or posters.

    • I saw an advertisement for a new phone in the newspaper.

    • I found an online advertisement for a language app.

  • Commercial = a specific type of advertisement that appears on TV or radio.

    • The TV commercial for the car was very funny.

    • The commercial on TV made me want to try the snack.
