Topic: Talking About Travel

In this lesson, students will develop vocabulary and conversation skills by talking about travel and focusing on Thailand.

Lesson Notes September 15, 2026 (Elementary)

Words & Phrases

• I was very surprised by my mother’s weakening, and she became more confused. (Similar phrase “my mother’s sudden decline)

• There are roots growing around a Buddha statue.

  • The king built three tombs for his children.

  • When I gave the elephant food I could feel the power of its trunk. (We can also say “When I fed the elephant …”)

• I asked the guide ‘What is this made of?’ and she told me it was covered in many small mirrors. (This sentence uses “direct quote”, is we use “reported speech” we say “I asked the guide what it was made of …”)

• I think Thai fast food are quick, single plate meals from street food stalls, and local market vendors.

• We booked a vacation package to Thailand, so flights and hotel were included.

  • We booked an evening boat tour.

• In the bathroom I had to scoop water into the bowl to flush away waste.

Appropriate Language

• My grandmother lived in an assisted living community. She had her own small apartment, and some medical services in the building too. (= a facility with (semi)-independent living spaces)

• One of my students volunteers at an adult day (care) centre. (= a programme with social activities, meals, and health monitoring in a safe environment)
