Words & Phrases

• The YouTube channel I watch has a lot of 15 minute (videos / episode). (“Program” is used for traditional TV and radio broadcasts)

• The performance was held at Opera City near Hatsudai station.

  • How many people does the hall hold?

  • Why does your sister like this performer? (Using “why” asks for reasons)

    • She has an incredible dynamic range. Her music sounds expressive from very quiet to very loud.

• My friend is very proud of her granddaughter and what she has been doing.

  • She had told me she wasn’t feeling satisfied, so I gave her some support after listening to her story.

  • She looked down talking about her life, but her face lit up when she mentioned her granddaughter.

• Someone left a strange message on my answering machine.

  • I’m pretty sure it’s a phone scam. There are some fake police scams in the area.

Appropriate Language

• Kill time (Verb phrase) = Waste time or make it go faster because you are waiting for something.

  • We played card games at the airport terminal to kill time before our flight.

  • I walked around the bookshop for thirty minutes just to kill time until my doctor's appointment.

  • Instead of killing time on his phone, he listened to a podcast while waiting for the bus.

• Spend time (Verb phrase) = Use time intentionally on an activity, person, or goal.

  • I love to spend time with my grandparents during the summer holidays.

  • He spends a lot of time reading books in the local library on weekends.

  • It is important to spend quality time relaxing after a long week at work.
