Words & Phrases

  • It didn’t really rain today.

    • It was spitting a bit when I was coming home.

  • It was rainy like cats and dogs yesterday afternoon.

    • The river flooded. (= It spread out of its normal banks and affected the surrounding area.)

    • The river overflowed. (=  the river itself spilling over its banks, like water going past the top of a container.)

  • In the past, there have been landslides in the Ozenji area.

  • I was out yesterday and got caught in the heavy downpour.

    • I was soaked. (= It says you were completely wet.)

    • I was soaking wet. (= It really emphasizes how wet you were, almost dripping.)

  • That party got a few seats in the parliament. (More casual)

    • That party won some seats in parliament. (Natural in political context)
