Words & Phrases

  • ‘Florentine biscuits’ are from Florence.

  • There are a lot of trees with red leaves in the temple.

    • There are a lot of red-leaved trees in the temple.

  • I went halfway down to the river, but my husband went all the way down.

    • Did you two go there by yourselves or in a tour group?

    • It was sunny and there was no wind.

  • A gorge is usually narrow, steep, and deep, often with a river flowing through it. It gives a feeling of being tight or enclosed.

    • A gorge is narrow and dramatic.

  • A canyon is generally wider and larger than a gorge, often with massive cliffs and open space.

    • A canyon is wide and grand.

  • Balmy (adjective) = pleasantly warm, gentle, and comfortable (especially describing weather) (Synonyms: mild, pleasant) (NOTE: you might say it after a spring or autumn day that feels comfortable and soft, not too hot or cold.)

    • It was a balmy evening perfect for a walk by the beach.

    • We sat outside enjoying the balmy summer breeze.
