Words & Phrases

  • Mine (noun) = a place where minerals, metals, or other valuable materials are extracted from the ground

    • The coal mine closed after fifty years of operation.

    • Workers descended deep into the mine to extract gold.

    • Old mines can be dangerous if they’re not properly sealed.

  • Quarry (noun) = an open excavation where stone, marble, or other materials are cut or blasted from the earth

    • The limestone was taken from a quarry nearby.

    • You could hear the machines working at the quarry all day.

    • Many quarries are later filled with water and turned into lakes.

  • When my sons visit my house I often make dumplings.

  • Dumpling (noun) = a small piece of dough, sometimes filled with meat, vegetables, or sweets, that is boiled, steamed, or fried

    • We ordered pork dumplings and hot soup for lunch.

    • She learned how to make Chinese dumplings from her grandmother.

    • The stew came with fluffy dumplings floating on top.

  • Boats and Ships

    • Boat = A small or medium-sized watercraft used on rivers, lakes, or near the coast. Boats usually carry people or small amounts of cargo. (Fishing boat, rowboat, sailboat, speedboat etc)

  • Ship = A large sea-going vessel designed for long-distance travel, cargo transport, or military use. Ships usually have a full crew, multiple decks, and complex navigation systems. (Cruise ship, cargo ship, warship)
