Words & Phrases

  • It’s a little cold in my office, so I am wearing a vest.

  • The weather agency said we had the first winter winds yesterday.

  • Have you seen any raccoon-dogs in your yard? (NOT on your ground)

    • My neighbour said they saw a civet around the empty house.

  • I enjoyed watching the Major League Baseball World Series.

    • It was a really interesting series to watch.

    • The last game was exciting.

  • Canada has a daily Question Period where opposition leaders can directly question the Prime Minister about government policy, scandals, or current issues.

  • Heckle (verb) = to interrupt a speaker or performer with aggressive or mocking comments

    • The comedian was heckled by someone in the front row.

    • Politicians often get heckled during public speeches.

    • He kept his cool even when the audience started to heckle him.

  • Civet (noun) ˈsɪvɪt / SIH-vuht

Appropriate Language

  • Bureaucrat (noun) = an official who works in a government or administrative office, often concerned with rules and procedures rather than efficiency or people

    • He’s a bureaucrat who follows every rule to the letter.

    • Many citizens complain that bureaucrats make things unnecessarily complicated.
