Words & Phrases

  • Do you still have a (landline / home telephone)? (Both are correct, but “landline” is more natural in everyday conversation.)

  • I don’t want to look like a cheapskate so I spent a little bit more money. (I don’t want to look like a cheapskate so I spent a little bit more money.)

  • My grandkids were the joy of my life until five years old.

    • As they grow I worry more and more about them.

  • Her story had both true events and imaginary ones.

    • I told her my feelings after reading her story.

  • I used the spare key to unlock my car and the car alarm went off. (Go off (phrasal verb) = to happen or start suddenly, especially when an alarm or device starts suddenly)

    • The alarm will go off if you use the fob to lock it and then try to unlock it with the actual key.

  • I found the key in the mud under a pile of branches and leaves.

Appropriate Language

  • Survey (noun) = a method of collecting information or opinions from a group of people, often using questions (Synonyms: poll)

    • The company conducted a survey to understand customer satisfaction.

    • According to the survey, most people prefer online shopping.

    • She filled out a survey about her recent visit to the museum.

  • Questionnaire (noun) = a written set of questions used to gather information or opinions from people

    • Participants were asked to complete a short questionnaire.

    • The questionnaire helped the researchers collect detailed feedback.

    • She carefully answered each question in the questionnaire.
