Words & Phrases

  • Do you mind if I share my very embarrassing news?

  • My brain blanked out, I couldn’t remember what I went into the kitchen for.

  • I looked more carefully in my bag for my key.

  • I went to my high school reunion. The year I graduated had a lot of classes. (In English, we often say “the year” to mean the year you graduate, not your grade.

    • There were several classes in my year, and each class had around forty students.

    • I’ve never gone to any of my reunions. I’m jealous to hear about your enjoyable reunions.

    • There’s a university reunion every two years that I enjoy going to.

    • Have you ever been the organizer of your reunions?

  • Alumni (noun) = people who have graduated from or formerly attended a particular school, college, or university

    • The university invited its alumni to the annual reunion.

    • Several alumni donated generously to their old college.

    • Alumni often return to campus to give talks or workshops.

  • Pass out (phrasal verb) = to lose consciousness (Synonyms: faint, collapse)

    • He felt dizzy and passed out during the hot summer day.

    • After running the marathon, she almost passed out from exhaustion.

    • He passed out after drinking way too much.

  • It’s hard for me to keep up with everyone’s conversations.

  • Bulletin (noun) = a short official statement or report providing information or news (Synonyms: announcement, notice, report)

    • The school put up a bulletin about the upcoming events.

    • The news bulletin reported heavy traffic on the highway.

    • He checked the company bulletin board for updates on the project.

  • I keep in touch with very few people from school.

Appropriate Language

Grades & Classes

  • In English, we usually use a few different ways to talk about this, depending on whether you’re focusing on the grade level or the individual class/section

    • The grade is the year level itself

    • A class (or sometimes “section”) is one group of students within that grade

    • When I was in Grade 3, there were three classes, and each class had around 35 students.

    • Our grade went on a field trip together, and all three classes joined.

Reunions

  • a reunion is a gathering of people who haven’t seen each other for a while.

  • School or college reunions

    • We often specify the year or class:

    • “I went to my high school reunion from the class of 2010.”

    • “We’re having a 10-year college reunion next month.”

    • “The reunion was small, only about 20 people showed up.”

  • Family reunions

    • These usually happen on holidays or special occasions:

    • “We have a family reunion every summer at my aunt’s house.”

    • “The reunion was fun; all the cousins played games together.”
