Words & Phrases

  • The movie theatre was completely sold out.

  • Today, the new pope, Leo XIV, was elected.

    • The papal election mattered a lot to Catholics, but most people around the world didn’t think much of it.

  • The wind is blowing strongly right now, I can hear it.

    • “The wind is blowing really hard right now—I can hear it.” (more casual and natural in everyday speech; using “hard” is more common in spoken English than “strongly” when referring to wind)

  • That is an overly simplistic view of geopolitics.

  • We planned our own trip to Austria, but the Croatia trip is a group tour.

    • ‘Private trip’ isn’t wrong, but there are more natural phrases in English

    • “We planned the trip ourselves.”

    • “It’s just a personal trip.”

    • “It’s not a tour, it’s a trip we organized.”

    • “We’re travelling on our own, not with a group.”

  • How long is your trip?

    • How long are you staying in Austria?

    • How many days are you in Croatia?

    • A private meeting or assembly, often for decision-making; especially used for the meeting of Roman Catholic cardinals to elect a pope
