Words & Phrases

  • I saw a couple of raccoon dogs in the restaurant’s garden.

    • The owner said the two are mates.

    • Mate (noun – animal context)

      • One of a pair of animals that reproduces together.

  • I sometimes walk around the Hiroo neighbourhood and I’ve seen raccoon dogs.

  • Two monkeys were chasing a child in a residential neighbourhood.

  • A sewage pipe broke in Kyoto.

    • A water main broke and caused flooding.

  • He’s a contemporary artist who uses sculpture, painting and mixed media in his works.

  • Rerun = casual, typically for entertainment shows or series.

    • They’re showing reruns of that old sitcom every night.

  • Rebroadcast = more formal, often for news, special events, or informative programs.

    • The documentary will be rebroadcast on Sunday.

    • They rebroadcast the match for viewers in different time zones.

  • Did you buy a full loaf or a half loaf of that bread?

  • There were many people standing in line. (NOT making a line)

  • Sourdough bread is a type of fermented bread with a tangy flavour.

  • I asked the nearby electronic shop to replace my broken interphone and doorbell.

    • I had them install the main unit downstairs and another smaller unit upstairs.

A: No problem. By the way, did you install that new plug-in for your browser?
B: Yeah, I tried it. It helps block ads. Want me to send you the link?
A: Please! My screen is full of pop-ups lately.
