Words & Phrases

  • I’m thinking of having my hair cut short.

    • Have you ever had bangs?

    • I tried changing the part in my hair, but it keeps going back to the centre.

  • My granddaughter won some sweets at the shooting gallery.

    • My granddaughter and I made a pouch. I don’t have a sewing machine, so we sewed it by hand.

  • Did you eat the chocolate cake in one sitting?

  • A large art group held an exhibit and showed some of my husband’s works.

    • My husband’s works were exhibited at a large exhibition.

    • He’s up for membership in this group, so they are showcasing his works.

  • The aji-fry was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. (= describes a texture that is soft, delicate, and easy to chew)

  • There was a large boisterous festival outside of Odawara Station. There were a lot of religious floats and people singing and dancing.

  • I watched some comedic storytelling (rakugo), and another day I listened to dramatic storytelling (koudan).

Grammar

  • Almost always (adverbial phrase) = Very close to 100% of the time; nearly every time.

    • I almost always eat toast for breakfast, but sometimes I have cereal.

    • The bus is almost always late when it rains.

    • She almost always carries an umbrella in her bag just in case.

Appropriate Language

  • Sparkler (noun) (spɑːr.klɚ / spar-kler) = A small, thin metal stick that you hold in your hand. When you light the end, it burns with many bright, shining sparks. A type of handheld firework.

    • The children played with sparklers in the garden on New Year's Eve.

    • Be careful when you hold a sparkler because it is very hot.

    • We waved the sparklers in the air to write our names with light.

  • In one sitting (idiom) = to finish an entire task or consume something completely without stopping or getting up. It’s most commonly used for eating, watching a TV series, or reading a book.

    • I read the entire newspaper in one sitting.

    • The book was so interesting that I read it all in one sitting.

    • He was very hungry, so he ate the whole pizza in one sitting.

  • Boisterous (adjective) = A person, event, or behaviour that is noisy, energetic, and full of life.

    • The boisterous children were playing loudly in the park.

    • Our neighbours had a boisterous party last night with lots of music and laughing.

    • The crowd became very boisterous when their team won the game.

Short Dialogues

A: I had a very busy and tiring Golden Week with my family.
B: Well, you don’t look tired.
A: No, but I feel exhausted.
