Words & Phrases

    • How was everyone’s Golden Week? (to a group)

    • What did you all do for Golden Week?” (very casual and natural)

  • Did you change your hairstyle?

    • I trimmed my bangs.

    • Trim (verb); to cut something slightly in order to make it neater, tidier, or the right size

    • She trimmed her hair to get rid of the split ends.

    • He trimmed the hedge into a neat shape.

    • Please trim the edges of the paper before submitting it.

  • A lot of people want to treat themselves to something nice.

    • Were there a lot of customers over the last week?

    • Do you have some repeat customers?

  • Clingy (adj); describes a person, animal, or thing that clings or sticks too closely—either physically or emotionally

    • The toddler was clingy and didn’t want to leave her mother’s side.

    • He’s a bit clingy in relationships and texts constantly.

    • My cat gets really clingy when I come home from a trip.

Appropriate Language

Potter

  • Makes functional items like bowls, cups, plates, vases.

  • Typically works with a pottery wheel.

  • Focuses on traditional pottery and usable wares.

  • More common, everyday term.

Ceramicist

  • A broader term that includes anyone who works with clay and ceramics.

  • Can make both functional items and sculptural or artistic pieces.

  • May use various techniques, including hand-building, sculpting, or using molds.

  • Sounds more artistic or formal.
