Words & Phrases

  • There are no direct flights to Cambodia. There’s a layover in Hanoi.

  • Some of the pavilions at the Osaka Expo needed reservations.

    • You needed reservations for some of the pavilions at the Osaka Expo. (Slightly more conversational)

  • I flew because my mileage was going to expire.

    • The plane circled the airport, waiting to land.

  • Are you going to have Viennese coffee while your in Vienna?

  • Walking to the temple my legs almost (died / gave out).

Word Journal

  • Contribute (verb): To give something (such as time, money, ideas, or effort) to help achieve or provide something.

  • Rhododendron ( American: ˌroʊdəˈdɛndrən ) ( British: ˌrəʊdəˈdɛndrən ) rho-do-DEN-dron

  • The lake was really tranquil. (= no waves)

  • Withdrawal refers to taking money out of a deposit account like a chequing or savings account.

    • You might see “withdrawal limits” or “withdrawal transactions”.

Health & Illness

  • I’m not going to be able to go to the concert because I have a bad stomach flu.

  • What are your usual cold symptoms?

    • What symptoms do you have when you have a cold?

    • Sometimes I get the chills.

  • My runny nose is like a waterfall.

    • My nose is running like a faucet.

    • I like my fried egg with a runny yolk.

    • That pasta sauce was really runny.
