Words & Phrases

  • That hairstyle suits you.

    • Having short hair must feel cool.

    • Short hair is so low-maintenance.

  • My feeling is the same as you.

  • What was the (title / name) of the exhibition you went to?

    • What was that exhibition called?

  • Stray (adj / noun) = A domestic animal that is lost or has no home.

    • The animal shelter takes in straydogs and tries to find them new homes.

    • I think there are about three or four straycats in my neighbourhood.

  • Pickpocket (noun / verb)

    • = (Noun) A person who steals money or other valuables from people's pockets or bags in public places, usually without them noticing.

      • Watch out for pickpockets when you are walking through the crowded market. (plural noun)

      • He lost his passport to apickpocket while boarding the train in Rome. (singular noun)

    • = (Verb) To steal from someone’s pocket in this way.

      • I didn't even realize I hadbeenpickpocketed until I tried to pay for my coffee.

  • For his art, he uses pastels and sometimes he draws cats and dogs.

Grammar

  • The difference between "listen" and "hear" is all about intent.

    • Listen (Action/Intent): You are paying attention. You are trying to understand or enjoy the sound. It is an active choice.

      • I am listeningto music.

      • Can you turn down the TV? I am listeningfor the delivery man.

    • Hear (Sensation/Ability): The sound enters your ears whether you want it to or not. It is a physical sense.

      • Is my volume too low? Can you hear me?

      • I can hear the neighbour’s music. Why are they playing it so loudly?

      • I heard a loud bang when i turned off my bedroom light.

Appropriate Language

Suits vs Fits vs Matches

  • “Suits” talks about appearance and style.

    • That blue shirt suits your eyes.

  • “Fits” talks about size and shape.

    • These shoes don't fit; they are too small.

  • “Matches” talks about two things together

    • Your tie matches your jacket.

Food vs Feed

Simple rule: Food is the thing you eat. Feed is the action of giving that thing to someone or something.

  • “Food” is a noun, usually uncountable, but we use plural when talking about types or categories

    • Thefood at the new Italian restaurant is very delicious. (uncountable noun)

    • Vitamin C is found in many different foods, like oranges and bell peppers. (plural noun)

  • “Feed” is a verb meaning to give food to a person, animal, or group (feed / fed / fed)

    • Don't forget to feed the cat before you leave for work.

    • The mother fed the baby a spoonful of mashed carrots.
