Topic: Talking about Food and Drink

In this lesson, students will develop conversation skills by talking about shopping and eating habits. The lesson also focuses on countable and uncountable nouns.

Lesson Notes March 17, 2026 (Elementary)

Words & Phrases

  • Someone said that their allergy to cypress started yesterday.

    • The pollen count is very high today, so my allergies are terrible.

    • I started taking an herbal medicine along with my regular allergy medicine. (= traditional Chinese medicine)

  • The wine cost more than the food.

    • The price of the wine was higher than the price of the food.

  • “I ate several pieces of sushi.” (“Sushi” is uncountable, so we use the counter “a piece of ~”)

Countable & Uncountable Nouns

  • Section 7

    • big shops = large supermarkets

    • small shops = green grocers, meat shop, fish shop

    • market = a farmer’s market

  • I have a piece of toast and some fruit.

  • My husband and I do the food shopping together.

    • Recently, whoever has the time does the cooking.

  • When we were younger we always used the shopping street.

  • The unagi shop doesn’t take reservations. (= accept reservations)
