Words & Phrases

  • Have you ever driven in a foreign country?

  • I wasn’t paying attention for a few moments and almost caused an accident the other day, and my heart almost stopped.

    • This lady’s attention wandered and she tried to cross the street diagonally, luckily the driver slammed on the brakes in time.

  • Do you have any experience driving through a roundabout?

  • Some sightseeing spots are thinking about dual pricing.

    • Dual (adjective) ˈdjuːəl/ DYOO-ul (Rhymes with fuel) = Having two parts, aspects, or functions.

      • There are some people in Canada who have dual citizenship, meaning they are citizens of two different countries.

  • Price gouging (verb/noun) = when a shop or seller makes a price much higher than normal.

    • During the storm, the water was $10 a bottle. This is price gouging.

    • The government says price gouging is wrong and shops must stop.

    • I did not buy the bread because the price was too high; it was price gouging.

Short Dialogues

A: Don’t you travel overseas two or three times a year?
B: No, not that often. Only about once a year.
A: Really? It seems to me like you travel twice a year at least.
B: You must be thinking of someone else!

A: Does your holiday start next week?
B: No, the week after.

A: Tom’s birthday is tomorrow, right?
B: It’s the day after actually.
