Words & Phrases

  • Are you talking about the surprise snow we had this morning?

    • The snow looked wet and heavy, not soft and fluffy.

    • I was woken up by freezing rain this morning.

    • The freezing rain turned to sleet and eventually it started to snow.

  • There is a lot of shade in my yard, so most flowers aren’t blooming yet.

  • There are so many light pink Christmas roses in my garden.

    • Do you know what plants reproduce easily? (more scientific)

  • Invasive species (noun) [Countable] = A living thing (animal, plant, fungus, or bacteria) that is not native to a specific location

    • The invasive species of zebra mussels has clogged many water pipes in the Great Lakes.

    • If you bring fruit from another country, you might accidentally introduce an invasive species of insect.

    • Gardeners are encouraged to plant native flowers instead of invasive species that crowd out local plants.

  • My neighbour’s cat gets into my garden and annoys me, but I keep my mouth shut to keep the peace.

  • There was an old house covered in ivy. I was worried about it collapsing. Luckily, it was demolished in a day.

Pronunciation

  • Narcissus (noun) [Countable] nɑːrˈsɪsəs/ nar-SIS-us

    • Narcissi (noun) [plural] nɑːrˈsɪsaɪ/ nar-SISS-eye (Can also use “narcissuses”)

Appropriate Language

"Multiply" vs. “Spread" for gardening

  • Multiply: to increase in total number

    • My lilies multiple every year.

  • Spread: to grow outward and cover more ground

    • The mint is spreading everywhere!

  • Self-seed: to drop seeds and grow new plants

    • This grass self-seeds easily.
