Everyday English (Elementary)

Topic: Talking about Food and Drink

In this lesson, students will develop conversation skills by talking about shopping and eating habits. The lesson also focuses on countable and uncountable nouns.

Lesson Notes March 10, 2026 (Elementary)

Words & Phrases

  • At the park nearby there cherry blossoms are blooming along the hillside.

    • My amaryllis is in full bloom now.

    • I repot the plant once every two years.

      • My plant tipped over and spilled some soil, so I added some fresh dirt.

    • The plant has been growing for many years, and finally, this year it is blooming.

      • These bulbs are flowering for the first time since I planted them.

  • Our teacher showed us how to do it by dancing one verse at a time.

    • We learned the dance moves verse by verse.

  • I saw a flyer for a new gym in my area.

  • In awe of (idiom) = A feeling of great respect, wonder, or even a little bit of fear.

    • I was in awe of all the

    • She was in awe of her dance teacher.

    • The cherry tree was in full bloom and I was in awe.

  • Ganbanyoku in English it is usually called a hot stone spa, stone sauna.

Appropriate Language

"Bulbs" vs. “Flowers"

  • The bulb is the underground part

  • The flower or bloom is what we see above ground

  • We often use "bulbs" to refer to the whole plant (like tulips or daffodils) before they have fully grown

Talking about blooming of flowers

  • We often don’t use percentages, here are more natural phrases

    • Start of bloom

      • They are starting to (bloom / flower).

    • Middle (50%)

      • They are in half-bloom

    • Peak

      • They are in full (bloom / flower).

    • End of season

      • The petals are starting to fall.

      • The flowers are finished.

Countable & Uncountable Nouns

Section 7: Here are sample responses for each question

  • What do you have for breakfast every morning?

    • I usually have toast and coffee. Sometimes I eat an egg or a banana. I like a quick breakfast.

  • Who does the food shopping in your home? And who does the cooking?

    • My husband does the food shopping on Saturdays. I usually do the cooking because I like making dinner.

  • Where do you like buying food: in big shops, small shops or in a market? Why?

    • I like buying food in big shops. They are near my house and the food is cheap.

  • What food do you always have at home?

    • I always have rice, milk, and apples. I like fruit, so I always buy apples.

  • What food do you like but never have at home? Why not?

    • I like pizza, but I never have it at home. It is difficult to make, so I go to a restaurant.
