Lesson Notes March 6, 2026 (FRIDAY ZOOM)

Words & Phrases

  • We took my mother to the hospital. She’s not doing so well.

    • When she was at home, we stayed with her constantly. Now she is in the hospital, so we can't stay with her.

    • She’s hooked up to some machines, so I can’t help her now.

  • Are you busy getting ready for your trip?

    • Where are you going?

    • Are you travelling with your husband and your friends? (We don’t say “friend’s couple”)

      • A "couple" is a noun that shows two people in a relationship. We don't usually use it as a possessive like "friend's couple." Instead, we use "another couple" or simply “friends.”

  • I saw a movie called Rental Family. It was a heart-warming drama. It’s a movie about human connection.

    • The movie theatre was about half full. I don’t think anyone knows about it yet.

    • The movie was released on February 27.

      • The movie has been showing for a week.

  • I went to a sing-along concert where we got to sing with opera singers.

    • The ticket was only ¥1400 for a two-hour concert. It was well worth the money.

    • “Cost performance” (kosupa) is a technical term used in business factories. Some better phrases would be:

      • It was a great value.

      • It was a bargain.

      • It was a steal. (This is an idiom meaning it was so cheap it felt like stealing)

  • The concert hall is close to my home.

    • The concert hall is near my house.

    • The concert hall is within walking distance of my house.

  • The Kabuki Theatre is far from my home.

    • The Kabuki Theatre is a long way from my home.

    • The Kabuki Theatre is nowhere near where I live. (Very natural)
