Lesson Notes June 30, 2026 (TUESDAY ZOOM)

Words & Phrases

  • Japan was the first to score in the match.

    • Canada advanced to the top 16 in the tournament.

  • Odds are that now that Japan is out of the World Cup the media won’t follow it anymore.

    • The games are aired in the middle of the night in Japan, so it was really hard to watch. (= the house typically between midnight and 4:00am)

  • Former head coach Hong Myung-bo and a few of his players for the South Korean men's national football team were met with boos from angry people. (= the team was booed)

  • The next Grand Sumo Tournament will run from July 12 to July 26.

  • Do you want to go peach picking with me this weekend?

    • We went strawberry picking with our children when they were young.

  • I tried the apples from New Zealand and they were tart and delicious. (= somewhat sweet and sour)

  • Each supermarket was fully stocked with fruits, and I was slightly amazed.

    • The supermarket had a lot of (ready-made / precooked) meals.

Appropriate Language

A person is called a host when they are playing themselves and managing a show's format

  • Talk Shows & Late-Night Shows: The person whose name is usually in the title.

    • "Tetsuko Kuroyanagi has been the host of Tetsuko's Room since 1976.”

  • Game Shows & Reality Competitions: The person who explains the rules, asks the questions, or eliminates contestants.

    • "Before they went on hiatus, the idol group Arashi hosted their own game show, Vs Arashi."

  • Travel, Cooking, & Documentary Shows: The person who travels around, interviews locals, or cooks the food.

    • "Various television announcers rotate to host CBC's 3-Minute Cooking alongside a professional chef."

  • We do not use “host” for news broadcasts, we use the term “anchor” for the main person reading the news at the desk.
