Words & Phrases

  • After moving I have so many cardboard boxes.

  • The new cupboards are slowly filling up.

  • I voted just before the polls closed.

    • Shortly after the polls close, news agencies begin to project the winners.

  • The candidate I voted for did not win in my area.

    • How many candidates were running in our area?

  • All the candidates say basically the same thing. I would prefer to hear more reality.

  • He’s been absent from two tournaments due to injury.

    • This is the second tournament he will miss due to injury.

  • When he gives interviews he sounds and looks very charming.

    • His way of answering was very clear.

  • How is your new house?

    • How’s the island in your kitchen?

  • Cupboard (noun) ˈkʌb.ədz / CUP-boards (NOTE: the ‘p’ is silent)

Appropriate Language

  • vote (verb / noun); to choose a person or answer in an election (Synonyms: choose, decide, select)

    • I voted yesterday.

    • Who are you going to vote for?

    • They counted all the votes last night.

  • election (noun) the time when people vote to choose someone for a job (usually in politics) (Synonyms: vote, poll, ballot)

    • The election is next week.

    • She won the last election easily.

    • There’s a lot of news about the election.

  • candidate (noun); a person who wants to be chosen in an election

    • That candidate is very popular.

    • How many candidates are running this time?

    • I don’t like any of the candidates.

  • ballot (noun); a piece of paper or system used to vote (Synonyms: vote, paper, form)

    • I dropped my ballot into the box.

    • Have you filled out your ballot yet?

    • The ballots are being counted.

  • poll (noun / verb); a survey of public opinion or a place where people vote (Synonyms: survey, vote, election)

    • The polls open at 7 a.m.

    • The latest poll says she’s winning.

    • We went to the local poll station to vote.

  • political party (noun); a group of people with the same ideas about government (Synonyms: group, movement, organization)

    • She belongs to a different political party.

    • The two main parties are arguing again.

    • That party wants to lower taxes.
