Lesson Notes July 22, 2025 (Vocabulary Building)

Words & Phrases

  • Her hand (motions / movements) were so beautiful.

  • My granddaughter is enrolled in an English sports program.

    • There’s a long waitlist of kids who want to join the program.

    • The kids in the program can learn some English.

  • A lot of schools have modern and popular dance clubs.

  • My granddaughter can move really fast on her (strider / kick) bike. (Strider bike is the more common and natural term in English for a pedal-less balance bike)

  • Young kids like to play on (the swings / the slide / the jungle gym).

    • Did you children play in the sandbox when they were young?

Word Journal

  • Mischievous; causing or showing a fondness for causing trouble in a playful or harmless way; sometimes also refers to slightly naughty behaviour (Synonyms: naughty, cheeky, playful)

    • He gave me a mischievous grin before hiding my phone.

    • The children were being mischievous, giggling and sneaking sweets before dinner.

    • Her mischievous sense of humour always kept us on our toes.

  • Tutor (noun / verb); A tutor is a person who gives individual or small group instruction. As a verb, it means to teach or instruct someone, especially privately or outside of a formal classroom. (Synonyms: instructor, coach, mentor)

    • I hired a tutor to help me with maths before the exam.

    • She tutors university students in chemistry during the summer.

    • He worked as a private tutor while completing his own degree.

Health & Lifestyle

  • The thinker could be a tutor to younger students.

  • The bather might have liked wilderness adventures.

  • The eater could have a farm-to-table restaurant.

  • A speech therapist could support patients who had a stroke or other brain injury.

  • One of my old students is an actress at a (theatre / theatrical) company.

  • He works in a sumo stable as a stable master. He’s not the stable master, but he coaches or helps out with the wrestlers.

    • “A stable master” = one of possibly several people in a similar role, or someone with that job title in general

    • “The stable master” = the head or main person with that title in that specific stable
