Words & Phrases

  • It’s twenty-four degrees in this room. (This means the specific room you are currently in)

    • It’s 17 degrees in my room. (This usually means your bedroom)

  • There will be another cold snap this weekend. (= a short period of very cold weather)

  • I am going to go to a hot spring inn this weekend.

    • The inn prohibits children from staying.

    • Children are prohibited from staying at the inn.

  • The time difference between Japan and Italy is eight hours.

  • I have a membership for Costco. (ˈkɒs.koʊ / KOSS-koh)

    • I don’t go to Costco so often, maybe several times a year.

    • The renewal fee for Costco is ¥5200 a year.

  • I like to purchase (daily necessities / household essentials) in bulk. It makes my life so much easier.

  • In department stores I like to walk up and down the aisles to look at everything they have to sell.

    • Both sides of the aisles have goods. Some are stacked high.

  • I want to drink butterbeer at USJ. I’ve heard it tastes like butterscotch.

Pronunciation

  • Numbers ending in -TEEN put the stress on the second syllable. -TEEN has a clear, strong long ee sound at the end.

    • Fourteen (ˌfɔːrˈtiːn / four-TEEN)

    • Fifteen (ˌfɪfˈtiːn / fif-TEEN)

    • Sixteen (ˌsɪksˈtiːn / six-TEEN)

    • Seventeen (ˌsev.ənˈtiːn / sev-en-TEEN)

  • Numbers ending in -TY put the stress on the first syllable. -TY has a weak ending. The vowel is short and relaxed, often like tee but very light.

    • Forty (ˈfɔːr.ti / FOR-tee)

    • Fifty (ˈfɪf.ti / FIF-tee)

    • Sixty (ˈsɪks.ti / SIX-tee)

    • Seventy (ˈsev.ən.ti / SEV-en-tee)

Winter Olympics

  • People usually talk about the Winter Olympics in a pretty casual, sport-fan way, not in an official or textbook style.

    • We usually just say the Winter Olympics or the Winter Games.

  • People often say events rather than competitions. You’ll hear winter sports as a general term. Common ones people mention are skiing, snowboarding, figure skating, speed skating, ice hockey, curling, biathlon and bobsleigh. In conversation, people don’t list full official names.

  • The word athlete is common, but people also say skater, skier, snowboarder or player for ice hockey. You’ll hear gold medallist, silver medallist, bronze medallist, or more casually she won gold or he took silver.

  • Very common verbs are win, lose, beat, finish, and qualify. People say things lik “She won gold in the final”, “He didn’t qualify for the final", “They finished fourth, just off the podium”.

  • For judged sports, people often mention scores, points, penalties, or judging. Casual complaints like The judging was controversial or The scores felt a bit harsh are very common.
