Words & Phrases

  • He has trouble with his hearing. He can hardly hear.

  • I used to volunteer to teach Japanese to foreign residents.

  • For people from Nepal we use Nepalese or Nepali (more commonly used today)

  • She gave my a young nemophila. I was surprised that the birds ate all the leaves.

  • The leaves on my lemon tree are curling.

  • Water (verb) = to pour water on plants or soil

    • Please water the plants every morning.

    • She watered the garden in the evening.

  • My friend and I went to Ikegami Plum Garden to see the ume blossoms.

    • I think it’s also a hydrangea garden later in the year.

  • Shabby (adjective) = worn out, old, or in poor condition

    • He wore a shabby old coat.

    • The hotel room looked shabby and neglected.

Appropriate Language

  • Seasonings = general word for flavour additions

    • salt & pepper, herbs, spices, sauces

  • Spices = plant-based flavour ingredients

    • pepper, cinnamon, cumin, turmeric

  • Condiments = table sauces

    • ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, mayonnaise, hot sauce
