Words & Phrases

  • In Canada, students typically go to Kindergarten then Grade 1 through Grade 12. In university, students refer to their year of study as first year, second year, third year, and fourth year.

    • When I was in high school we went skiing in (Grade 10 / the 10th grade).

  • Which side of the family is your aunt on?

    • My aunt who moved to Canada is my dad’s younger sister.

  • I keep all the decorations in (the attic / storage).

Pronunciation

  • Diagonally (adverb) daɪˈæɡ.ə.nə.li / dye-AG-uh-nuh-lee

The Physical World

  • I live on the west side of Tokyo.

  • I live on the east side of Kanagawa Prefecture.

  • I live in the north part of Kawasaki.

  • There is a park directly behind my house.
