Words & Phrases

  • I still need to go and buy Sophie a Christmas gift.

  • Do you buy Christmas gifts for your family? Husband? Grandkids?

  • We put up our Christmas tree in early December.

    • The first presents were under the tree a couple of days later.

  • Traditionally, presents are opened on Christmas morning.

    • Some families allow kids to open up one gift on Christmas eve, which is usually pyjamas.

  • How many times a year do you go up to Nagano?

    • My husband goes up twice a month, especially in winter to check on the pipes.

  • I am the middle of three sisters, and we also had a brother.

    • I have three siblings.

  • Every morning, I go and pick blueberries before the birds get to them.

    • I dropped my container on the ground and picked it up.

Appropriate Language

  • Toque (noun) toʊk / TOHK = a close-fitting knitted winter hat, usually made of wool, often worn in Canada during cold weather

    • I grabbed my toque before heading out into the snow.

    • She knit a red toque for her nephew last winter.

    • You will want a warm toque if you visit Canada in January.

  • Check on (phrasal verb) = to look in on someone or something to make sure they are safe, well, or functioning properly

    • I need to check on my grandmother later to see how she is feeling.

    • Can you check on the soup to make sure it is not burning.

    • The teacher checked on the students during the test to see if anyone needed help.
