Words & Phrases

  • When I feel tired sometimes my eyes (feel swollen / start swelling).

  • Did she arrive at the event space in time for the performance?

    • Did she get to the venue in time for the performance?

    • Where was the (performance / event)? (‘Stage’ means the raised platform people stand on when they perform, so we don’t use it to mean the place where an event happens.)

      • There is a small stage upstairs in the city hall, and a large stage in the auditorium hall.

  • Did you sign her up for dance school?

    • Did you enrol him into piano lessons?

    • Did you put them into tennis?

  • Sprain (verb and noun) = an injury where a ligament is stretched or torn, usually caused by twisting a joint (Synonyms: twist)

    • I think I sprained my wrist.

    • I think I might sprain my ankle if I keep running on this uneven path.

    • The doctor said that the swelling was from a mild sprain.

  • Vent (noun) = an opening that lets air, gas, heat, or steam move in or out of a space, also the opening of a volcano

    • I cleaned the vent because dust was blocking the airflow.

    • The dryer was not working properly because the vent was clogged.

    • After the eruption a new vent opened.
