Lesson Notes December 9, 2025 (Vocabulary Building)

Words & Phrases

  • I slipped and fell down spraining my wrist.

  • I got a haircut a couple of days ago. ( In English, remember to use “get” or “have” to show that another person performed the action for you; unless you cut your own hair)

  • What are you looking forward to (doing / seeing / eating) on your trip to Egypt?

    • Nowadays, shots are not necessary for travel to Egypt.

    • You don’t need a special visa, you can buy it when you land.

  • When I was young we always had a real Christmas tree. Once we got older my parents switched to an artificial one.

Appropriate Language

  • Wintry mix (noun) = a type of cold wet weather that includes a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain, and sometimes rain

    • The forecast says we are getting a wintry mix tonight.

    • Driving is dangerous because the wintry mix is making the roads icy.

    • We thought it would snow, but it turned into a messy wintry mix.

Extreme Adjectives

Unit 13 Section 4

  • The temperature and wind were freezing cold.

    • The wind was ice cold.

  • There was a awful line for the taxi, so we wandered around for 30 minutes in the rain.

  • My cousins and I were delighted to be together after one year.

  • The sun was (blazing hot / beating down).

    • “Blazing hot” means the sun itself felt extremely hot.

    • “Beating down” means the sunlight was shining very strongly on you, usually in a harsh or intense way.
