Words & Phrases

• A lot of cacti have long spines that can easily prick you.

  • Roses have a lot of thorns.

  • Some plants have a milky white sap, that can cause skin irritations. (= redness, blistering, burning sensations, and severe dermatitis)

• Some plants, like “touch-me-nots” burst open to help spread their seeds.

  • The pit inside the peach was split open.

• Sow (verb) = to plant seeds in the ground

  • If you sow forget-me-nots in the autumn, they’ll bloom the following season.

  • The children sowed riced as part of their class project.

• My friend planted a row of kochias at her house.

  • In some places these plants are also called burning bushes.

• Who (takes care of / looks after) your garden at your second house?

• We went early to open up our cottage. We had to turn on the water main and let the water run for a few minutes.

  • At the end of summer, we closed up our cottage. We won’t return until next spring.
