Words & Phrases

  • How long did it take to fly (to South Africa / there)? (= this asks about the number of hours)

    • It took 26 hours from Tokyo with a layover in Singapore.

  • The lion eating an impala was not so far away, maybe two or three metres away.

    • I saw elephants swimming across a river. They were about 10 metres away.

  • We visited Cape Town’s waterfront. It was so gorgeous! (= Land or a part of a town that borders a body of water, such as an ocean, sea, lake, or river)

  • We skewered some lamb and vegetables then grilled it. (= verb)

    • We need several more skewers, we are running low. (= noun)

  • We took a train that was like a hotel. It had dining cars, observation cars and, sleeping compartments.

  • “Landslide” is a large umbrella term for any slope where rock, soil, or debris moves down a hill

    • Rockslide; large rocks sliding down

    • Mudslide; a river of mud

    • Avalanche; snow and ice sliding down a mountain

  • You’re lucky you only broke your arm. It could have been worse,

    • I was in a car crash. Thankfully, I only walked away with a few scratches. It could have been worse.

  • Are you playing tennis this summer?

    • I’m playing less than last year.
