January 20, 2023

The images below tell the story of what I saw as I walked around Tokyo on January 20th, 2023.

What did you do on this day?

I walked a route that criss-crossed portions of Tokyo that I’ve walked for many years. I started at Yoyogi Uehara station, and finished near Shinjuku station. I’ve learnt over the years to keep to the more vacant side streets, rather than the main streets. I tried to avoid people as much as possible, turning down the next available street as soon as I could. This did result in quite a lot of backtracking, and hitting the occasional dead-end, however this is beneficial as I could see a street from a variety of directions and views.

How do you feel about the photos a year later?

When I first viewed the photos, I could not tell where I had walked on this day. There was one photo, not in this gallery, that I instantly knew to be near Shinjuku station, from there I could somewhat backtrack and had an idea where I started. These images look like photos I might have taken any other day of the year, and I am quite pleased with that, since these photos, and this project, are supposed to function as a reminder. I believe the goal was achieved this year.
