Words & Phrases

  • Congratulations Noriko, your sumo wrestler won his matches.

  • Many cultures celebrate festivals during the autumnal equinox.

    • On the autumnal equinox, daylight and nighttime hours are almost the same.

  • Where is your family grave? (“Graveyard” usually means a whole cemetery, not a single family’s graves.)

    • There are three (cemeteries / graveyards) around this area.

  • Baby face (noun) = a face that looks young, round, and smooth, often giving a youthful or innocent appearance

    • He has a baby face, so people often think he’s younger than he is.

    • Her baby face makes her look innocent and approachable.

  • I’m watching my sumo matches, so don’t bother me.

    • I won’t be going out this weekend. I want to catch up on my stories. (“My stories” usually means the TV shows, sports events, cartoons etc that the speaker follows)

  • Their baton passes were not smooth.

    • They had trouble passing the baton.

Appropriate Language

Graveyard / Cemetery

  • Graveyard = a burial place that is next to a church, shrine, temple etc, often smaller and older.

    • That old graveyard is behind the church.

  • Cemetery = a burial place that is not next to a church, usually bigger and more modern.

    • My grandparents are buried in the local cemetery.
