Words & Phrases

  • I (put in / take out) my (dentures / false teeth).

  • The pole vaulter jumped six metres and thirty centimetres.

  • Some runners start ahead very fast but then gradually fall behind as the race goes on.

    • Two runners crashed into each other. One of them lost his balance and fell behind.

  • Sports science (noun) = the study of how the body works during exercise, training, and sport, often combining physiology, psychology, and biomechanics

    • She decided to major in sports science at university.

    • Sports science research has helped athletes improve their performance.

  • There were two Japanese men running in the steeplechase.

  • On the train, I saw a really tall man, and he had to duck to get off.

    • Duck (verb) = to lower your head or body quickly, often to avoid being hit or seen (Synonyms: bend, dodge, crouch)

      • He ducked under the low branch to avoid hitting his head.

      • She ducked when the ball came flying toward her.

      • The cat ducked behind the sofa as soon as the vacuum cleaner started.

  • The barrier to keep hikers off Mt Fuji is pretty much useless.
