Lesson Notes October 2, 2026 (FRIDAY ZOOM)

Words & Phrases

  • We are going to take a train for 16 hours. (Here “take” means to ride)

    • Don’t confuse it with “get on” which means to step or climb, and “get off” which means to leave or step down from a train, bus, ship or plane.

      • We stepped onto the platform and waited to get on the express train.

      • Make sure you have your ticket ready before you get on the plane.

      • Don't forget your bag when you get off the bus at Central Station.

      • Many tourists got off the ship to spend the day at the island market.

  • Did you hear the news about the co-pilot stabbing the pilot? After that the plane dropped 2000 metres.

    • People are thinking that the co-pilot wanted to crash the plane.

    • If I was on that flight, I think I would never fly again.

  • You can buy most cold medicine over the counter. For other things like antibiotics, you need a prescription from a doctor.

    • Most drug stores have a pharmacist on staff to assist customers and explain various medicines.

  • The pharmacist asked me to bring the empty and cleaned (bottle / container) back to get it refilled. He explained to me that the country is short on the materials to make it.

  • Do you sort all your garbage at home? I am sometimes confused about what is burnable, non-burnable and plastic. (In other countries you might hear “organic”, “regular trash”, “recyclables”, “plastics”)

    • In my old building I didn’t need to sort the recycling, there was a building manager who did it for us.
