Words & Phrases

  • Onosato withdrew from the Kyushu Grand Sumo Tournament's final day of competition Sunday

    • He quit the tournament due to injury.

    • He has a dislocated left shoulder requiring one month of treatment and recovery.

  • In each tournament he has been in, he has won in double digits. (= he has won ten or more matches)

    • He has only won in single digits. (We don’t just say “won single digits”)

  • The Sumo World Championships is an amateur sumo competition organized by the International Sumo Federation.

  • The sings will perform their old hits from years and years ago.

  • The oldies (noun) = popular music from an earlier period, typically from the 1950s to the 1980s

    • The radio station plays the oldies every Sunday morning.

    • She loves listening to the oldies from her youth.

    • The oldies section at the record store has all the classic hits.

  • Lyrics (noun) (ˈlɪr.ɪks / LYR-ics) = the words of a song

    • She wrote down the lyrics to her favourite song.

    • The singer forgot some of the lyrics during the live performance.

    • I enjoy reading the lyrics to understand the meaning behind the music.

  • Cheap (adjective) = low in price or cost; sometimes implies low quality

    • I found a cheap flight to Tokyo.

    • The shirt was cheap, but it didn’t last long.

    • He prefers buying cheap groceries to save money.

  • Reasonable price (noun) = a cost for something that is fair, not too high, and acceptable for its value

    • The shop offers clothes at a reasonable price.

    • We chose the hotel because it had a reasonable price and good reviews.

    • You can find furniture online for a reasonable price if you shop around.

Appropriate Sumo Language

  • Wrestler (noun) = The person competing in a sumo match.

    • The wrestler in red won the match.

    • Strong wrestlers often train for years before competing.

    • The wrestlers bowed to each other at the start.

  • Ring / Fighting ring (noun) = The circular area where sumo matches take place.

    • The wrestlers entered the ring.

    • Salt is thrown into the ring for good luck.

    • The match ended quickly in the ring.

  • Push / Thrust (verb) = To force the opponent backward with the hands.

    • He pushed his opponent out of the ring.

    • Strong legs help wrestlers thrust effectively.

    • Fans love matches with big pushes and throws.

  • Throw / Trip / Sweep (verb) = Techniques to make the opponent fall or lose balance.

    • He threw his opponent to win the match.

    • Sweeping the leg is a risky but effective move.

    • The wrestlers tried to trip each other at the start.

  • Belt / Waist belt (noun) = The thick cloth belt worn around the waist by the wrestler.

    • He grabbed his opponent’s belt to throw him.

    • The belt helps with grip and control.

    • Pulling the belt can change the match in a second.

  • Match / Bout (noun) = A single contest between two wrestlers.

    • Today’s first match was exciting.

    • The final bout lasted only ten seconds.

    • He has won all his matches this tournament.

  • Rank / Champion / Top wrestler (noun) = Position or status in the sport.

    • He is a top wrestler this season.

    • Champions get promoted to higher ranks.

    • The new champion impressed all the fans.

  • Ceremony / Ritual (noun) = Traditional movements before the match to show respect or prepare.

    • The wrestlers perform a short ceremony before the fight.

    • Fans enjoy watching the salt-throwing ritual.

    • These rituals have been part of sumo for centuries.

  • Exercise / Warm-up / Stomp (noun/verb) = Movements to prepare the body before the match.

    • Wrestlers stomp their feet as a warm-up.

    • This exercise improves balance and strength.

    • He repeated the stomp several times before the match.

  • Stew / High-protein meal (noun) = The hearty meals wrestlers eat to gain strength and weight.

    • Wrestlers eat a lot of stew every day.

    • This meal helps them stay strong.

    • Vegetables and meat are always part of their high-protein meals.

  • Stable / Training centre (noun) = Place where wrestlers live and train.

    • He lives in a training centre with other wrestlers.

    • The stable is very strict about schedules.

    • They train early in the morning in the stable.

  • Referee / Official (noun) = The person who controls the match and decides the winner.

    • The referee raised his hand to signal the winner.

    • Officials wear traditional clothing.

    • The referee has to make quick decisions during fast matches.
