Words & Phrases

  • The head of the anti-NHK political party, was arrested on Nov. 9 on suspicion of defaming the character of a Hyogo prefectural assembly member.

    • Defamation (noun) = the act of harming someone’s good reputation by saying or writing false things about them

    • The actor sued the magazine for defamation after it published false stories about him.

  • Foreign Ministry staff prepare documents that are then handed off to a top official to be checked, eventually ending up around the Prime Minister.

Appropriate Language

  • The word “extreme” means very large, intense, or serious, and it can be used in both positive and negative situations depending on context.

    • The weather was extreme, with heavy snow and strong winds.

    • Extreme poverty affects millions of people worldwide.

    • She has extreme talent in painting.

    • The athlete shows extreme dedication to training.
