Words & Phrases
He has been using a (cane / walking stick) because he’s a little unsteady.
The road is slippery from all the fallen cherry blossom petals.
He slipped while walking through the fallen cherry blossoms.
My shoes usually slip on manhole covers and drainage grates.
I was walking and fell face-first into a puddle.
I was running and fell backwards into a snowbank.
The Physical World
By the sea is more personal and visual. It usually means very close to the water
I’d love to live by the sea.
We stayed in a little cottage by the sea.
She grew up by the sea in Cornwall.
On the coast is more geographical and neutral. It just means in a coastal area.
Brighton is on the south coast of England.
They live on the coast, about ten minutes from the beach.
There are lots of small towns on the west coast of Canada.
There is a small (artificial) island just off the coast of Kawasaki.
I grew up by the water, and learned how to swim at an early agw.
