We will learn and practise vocabulary related to the physical world.

Lesson Notes March 3, 2026 (Vocabulary Building)

Words & Phrases

  • He has been using a (cane / walking stick) because he’s a little unsteady.

  • The road is slippery from all the fallen cherry blossom petals.

    • He slipped while walking through the fallen cherry blossoms.

    • My shoes usually slip on manhole covers and drainage grates.

  • I was walking and fell face-first into a puddle.

    • I was running and fell backwards into a snowbank.

The Physical World

  • By the sea is more personal and visual. It usually means very close to the water

    • I’d love to live by the sea.

    • We stayed in a little cottage by the sea.

    • She grew up by the sea in Cornwall.

  • On the coast is more geographical and neutral. It just means in a coastal area.

    • Brighton is on the south coast of England.

    • They live on the coast, about ten minutes from the beach.

    • There are lots of small towns on the west coast of Canada.

  • There is a small (artificial) island just off the coast of Kawasaki.

  • I grew up by the water, and learned how to swim at an early agw.

  • 1 Durban is by the Indian Ocean.

  • 2 Durban is on the east coast.

  • 3 Durban is right next to beaches.

  • 4 You can find museums in the city centre.

  • 5 Conferences are held at the new conference centre.

  • 6 Johannesburg is in the north of South Africa.

  • 7 Cape Town is on the west coast.
