Words & Phrases

  • There isn’t any space to (display / put) my dolls for the Girls’ Festival.

  • I wanted to talk to my daughter about her plans, but she wasn’t (at) home. (In modern English we often do not use ‘at’ with home.)

  • I don’t know the name of the place, but if you search online for it you can find it. (When looking for something we use “search”, “research” is when you study a topic in depth)

  • I heard on the news that the winner was born through surrogacy.

  • How often do you go to the gym?

    • I think two or three times a week is ideal.

  • My daughter’s second child is starting day care in April. (We usually use “start” when talking about day care and school)

  • Before planning your trips do you read books or search online?

    • I usually buy a guidebook a year in advance. I don't recommend the Japanese ones because they sometimes have mistakes.

    • I always Google the places I will visit.
