Words & Phrases

  • The forecast said that cherry blossom season has begun in Tokyo.

  • When is cherry season in Canada? (This is asking when the cherries are ripe and ready to be picked and eaten.)

    • “It's usually in June and July, especially in British Columbia.”

  • When is cherry blossom season in Tokyo? (This refers to the flowering period of the trees (the Sakura, and other ornamental types)

    • “It usually starts in late March and peaks in early April.”

  • I always think about going out to see cherry blossoms, but the season (passes by / disappears) quickly.

  • On this holiday, people visit their family graves. (NOT “people visit each family graves”)

  • I like to cook things like roast chicken and sautéed vegetables, but I don’t like to bake things like bread or sweets.

  • Strainer and colander are similar in function and shape (Synonyms: sieve, filter, sifter, drainer)
