Words & Phrases

  • How’s your new house progressing?

    • How’s the construction going on your place?

    • How’s the building work going at your place?

  • Scaffolding (noun); A temporary structure made of metal or wood used to support workers and materials during the construction, repair, or cleaning of a building.

    • The workers climbed the scaffolding to fix the windows on the upper floors.

    • The old church was covered in scaffolding during its renovation.

    • Safety is very important when working on scaffolding at great heights.

  • He was always a homebody, but now he is giving sports a try.

    • “Homebody” means someone who prefers staying at home rather than going out.

    • “Giving sports a try” is a casual and clear way to say he’s starting to explore or participate in sports.

Appropriate Language

  • In English, we use different words depending on how strong a storm is. Not all storms are called “typhoons.” A storm starts as “a tropical depression”, then becomes “a tropical storm”, and only after that, it may become “a typhoon”.

  • The common terms for skiing are “ski run” or “ski trail” (a marked path down a ski hill for skiing. “Slope” is also commonly used. The word “gerende”, from the German “Gelände” is not used in English.
